Tips & Tricks: Finding the ideal line
5. February 2025

WHAT IS MEANT BY THE IDEAL LINE?
The ideal line in karting describes the line on the track where you can drive the fastest time. It's not necessarily about the shortest route, because sometimes the shortest route leads to a loss of time in certain places.
Each track has its own ideal line, which is particularly determined by the curves.
BASIC TIPS FOR FINDING THE IDEAL LINE
There are a few basic tips that can help you move faster. Don't be afraid to use the full width of the roadway - that's what it's there for, after all! Aim for your desired line and the kart will follow you on its own. As with so many things in life, kart driving is key: practice makes the master! The more often you drive the track, the better the trajectory of the road will be imprinted in your head. Remember landmarks such as braking point, articulation point, vertex point and deflection point. And remember: a steady hand on the steering wheel is key! Any unnecessary steering correction brings unrest to the kart and costs valuable time.
THIS IS HOW YOU MASTER DRIVING CURVES
Since finding the ideal line when karting depends mainly on the corners, we tell you what to consider when driving corners:
You should basically start corners from the outside, then pull inward to the top. To get the most out of the corner, get carried outward at the end of the corner. That way, when you open the steering, you can take as much momentum as possible for the next straight.
The basic rule is the same for every corner, but each corner has its own ideal line. The sharper the curve, the sharper it should be driven. A more open curve can be driven more roundly, as the apex is reached later. If you pay attention to these details, over time you will get a better feel for the corners and improve your driving.
