After 24 years of loyalty and solidarity, the time had come to renew the surface of the outdoor track. In recent years, cracks have formed in some sections of the road due to water retention under the asphalt and subsequent frost. This increasingly led to bumps and bumps that put a strain on both the drivers’ backs and the karts. At the beginning of 2020 we made the decision to remove the pavement before the coming outdoor season and to completely renovate the route.
The preparations helped over the now empty booking calendar due to Covid-19. First of all, we started with the dismantling of the tire wall boards, the start-finish arch, the time loop and traffic lights. Then the milling cutters moved in and, despite the pouring rain, showed a motivation that we are otherwise only used to from kart races on the outdoor track. With innovative digital milling technology, the upper layers were removed by about six centimeters after alignment and measurement, so that the substructure of the route could also be renewed. Finally the binder course was applied. Two pavers working parallel to each other then applied the new surface course almost seamlessly. Tight curves were then added by hand. In total, over 1,000 (in words: one thousand!) Tons of asphalt were built. Now it was up to us to assemble the boards, time loop, traffic lights and the start-finish arch and marvel at the result.
The focus of the renovation was initially on a smooth, level track with excellent grip, which should enable comfortable driving even in wet conditions. We were able to check the former immediately after the work was completed and carry out internal test races on the brand new asphalt – to the enthusiasm of all employees! For days it remained unclear whether the brand new surface would offer enough grip even in the rain, because the April sky showed its sunniest side and made us eagerly wait many, many days for the long-awaited downpour. But what takes a long time … Our test pilots were completely convinced after a few laps in the rain!
